Astronaut Reveals Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.
The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a Amazon founder.
