Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" level.

Extremely High Pollution Measurements

Multiple areas of the capital registered an AQI over 500, which equals ten times the recommended limit established by the WHO.

Particular areas, levels of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable standards.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Current Changes

Since 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly smog that covers the city as colder weather approaches.

However earlier this year, the recently formed city government petitioned the supreme court to propose a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Judicial Decision and Reality

Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, the court approved the proposal, mandating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited hours throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was considerable disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with little enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded contamination reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe levels seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

International Consequences

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also triggered a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to deteriorating pollution levels in Lahore on pollutants originating in India following the festivities.

Long-Standing Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in Delhi have persisted as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.

During Diwali, the amount of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been observed to spike to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever documented in Beijing, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted urban center.

Diverse Pollution Sources

This crisis in the capital is attributed to a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, farmers illegally burn crop residue to prepare for next season, creating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.

Medical and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million people residing in the capital region is significant, according to various investigations.

This pollution leads to increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can result in cancer.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand untimely deaths per year in the capital.
