Uche Sparks Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Missing star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal direct passage to the last 16, particularly after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match offered a platform for several Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched even for a mostly second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
