Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such medications need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural changes.
